Kanjuruhan Stadium To Be Torn Down, President Jokowi: Built a New FIFA Standard

President Joko Widodo or Jokowi said the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang, East Java will be torn down in the near future. The stadium as the base of Arema FC was originally the location of the deaths of 133 supporters due to scrambling to get out because tear gas was fired by police.

"For the Kanjuruhan stadium in Malang, we will tear it down and we will rebuild it according to FIFA standards," said Jokowi at the Merdeka Palace, Central Jakarta, Tuesday, October 18, 2022.

Jokowi said FIFA President Gianni Infantino welcomed the idea. The interest was said when Jokowi and Gianni met at the Merdeka Palace, Central Jakarta at noon today.

"(Kanjuruhan Stadium was recreated) as an example of a standard stadium with good facilities, guaranteeing the safety of viewers, or players, and for supporters," said Jokowi.

Furthermore, Jokowi said that the repeated construction of the Kanjuruhan Stadium would be carried out directly by the Central Government. Jokowi plans to review the issue of stadium investment with FIFA when he visits the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in November 2022.

"What investment, in the future with details, we will discuss again, possibly in Qatar or in Bali in the next month, or in Qatar during the World Cup because I was invited exclusively," said Jokowi.

FIFA Drops In Security Experts

Throughout his office in Indonesia, Gianni said his faction would deploy stadium security experts to help the Indonesian government. According to Gianni, the Kanjuruhan disaster that occurred on October 1, 2022, arose due to insufficient facilities.

"So we will bring our experts to help and make investments. We will make sure that Indonesia sparkles on the global football stage and the first opportunity to do that," said Gianni.

Face-to-face meetings between Gianni and Jokowi have been expected since last week. In this face-to-face meeting today, the 2nd of them were involved in a conversation for more than two hours about the transfer of the form of Indonesian football.

After this face-to-face meeting, FIFA will be based in Indonesia until an undetermined time. Jokowi welcomed FIFA's way to make Indonesian football better.

"We jointly discussed some of the supports of The Needs of Indonesian football, the government together with FIFA wants to ensure that the process of transferring the form of Indonesian football goes according to the standards decided," said Jokowi closing face-to-face with FIFA.
